UNEP lifts suspension on Nigeria over wildlife trade

The United Nations Environment program (UNEP) has lifted the suspension on trade between Nigeria and other countries in all endangered plants and animal species as well as related products.

Nigeria was suspended from international trade in endangered species in March 2015 following its inability to submit an adequate National Ivory Action Plan (NIAP).

Minister of Environment Amina Mohammed announced this in a statement on Wednesday, ahead of the 2016 Wildlife Day billed for Thursday.

The request was in accordance with the provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) - FAUNA and FLORA (Plants and animals)

Mohammed appealed to Nigerians to do everything within the ambit of the law to protect the country's wildlife.

Otherwise, she said that the country stood the risk of losing economic and social opportunities which wildlife present to the economy in particular and the eco system in general.

The United Nations General Assembly in 2013, set aside March 3 of every year as "Wildlife Day."

The theme of the 2016 wildlife day is "The future of wildlife is in our hands." Endit
