Central African Republic president meets allies over parliamentary polls

Central African Republic's President-Elect Faustin Archange Touadera on Wednesday met in Bangui with candidates and leaders of political parties who supported him in the second round, to plan on winning a parliamentary majority during the second round of legislative elections.

Central African Republic's new Constitution that was adopted after the Dec. 13, 2015 referendum, provides that 141 members of parliament will seat in the country's parliament for the next five years.

Central African Republic voters went to the polls for the first round of legislative elections on the same day of the first round of presidential elections on Dec. 30, 2015.

However, due to numerous irregularities raised by candidates in the legislative elections, the Constitutional Court cancelled the results of the legislative elections and ordered the first round of the same elections be held together with the presidential runoff on Feb. 14, 2016.

According to official results announced by the Constitutional Court, after the first round, 45 members of parliament were declared elected. The remaining 96 members of parliament will be elected in the second round that is scheduled for March 11, 2016.

Touadera who was an independent candidate in the presidential elections, is counting on the support of the coalition that supported him to win a majority in the future parliament. Endit
