Tokyo stocks close higher on upbeat U.S. economic data, Wall Street's rise

Tokyo stocks closed higher Thursday as concerns about the health of the U.S. economy abated following upbeat data and buying here mirrored sentiment on Wall Street that saw shares rise overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 213.61 points, or 1.28 percent, from Wednesday to finish the day at 16,960.16.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 19.44 points, or 1.44 percent, to close at 1,369.05.

Notable advancers comprised marine transportation, banking and mining-linked stocks and the day's turnover was 2,538.2 billion yen (22.22 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
