Albania sends police to border to prepare for possible refugee influx

Xinhua, March 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Dozens of police officers from Albanian Rapid Intervention Forces (RIF) were sent to checkpoints bordering Greece and Macedonia to cope with possible refugee influx, Albanian Daily News reported on Wednesday.

The RIF troops have been stationed along the green border line between the two countries which so far was controlled only through surveillance cameras.

Albanian police confirmed that a good number of effectives from RIF of Tirana have been stationed in the green area of the customs of Kapshtica, south of Albania to support the border patrol units.

Units of RIF have been sent to the customs' checkpoints of Qafe-Thana, Kapshtica, Tre-Urat, Kakavija, Qafe-Bota, as well, they will be keeping an eye on the situation at the border.

Specialized units for crowd management which have been put in the Albanian south border will be supported by units of Border Directorate as well.

Some media are speculating that migrants and refugees trying to reach Europe from the Middle East might find a new route: migrants could in the future move from Greece toward Albania, and then toward Western Europe via Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia. Enditem
