Shanghai SIPG snatch 1st win, Guangzhou Evergrande stunned by Sydney FC

Xinhua, March 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Chinese Super League (CSL) side Shanghai SIPG savored their first win in the Asian Champions League campaign while defending champions Guangzhou Evergrande suffered an away loss to Sydney FC on Wednesday.

A debutant at the Asian Champions League, Shanghai SIPG who conceded a defeat to Melbourne Victory FC in the first round, overcame Suwon Bluewings 2-1 at home for their first victory at the continental tournament of the season.

Brazilian striker Elkeson, who moved to SIPG in the winter transfer window, scored the opener in the 32nd minute and helped Wu Lei net the second seven minutes into the second half before the visitors pulled one back in the 72nd minute.

With the victory, Shanghai SIPG moved to the second place of the group, one point behind Melbourne Victory FC who tied with Gamba Osaka 1-1.

However, the CSL giants Guangzhou Evergrande, who reaped two titles during the past years, were still away from their first victory as they were beaten by Sydney FC 2-1.

Ricardo Goulart, top scorer of the 2015 campaign, failed to convert from the spot four minutes after Robert Stambolziev of the home side found the net in the 21st minute. And the equalizer came only when Huang Bowen slammed his powerful shot into the far corner off a pass from Goulart.

Then, the defending champion suffered the fatal blow as substitute Milos Dimitrijevic scored the winner in the 88th minute.

Guangzhou Evergrande were suffering their worst opening jolt as they tailed in the group with only one point from two matches. The CSL side coached by Brazilian Felipe Scolari, will take on Urawa Red Diamond at home on March 16. Endit
