Tokyo shares ended the trading Wednesday sharply higher with its benchmark Nikkei index soaring over 4 percent on solid Shanghai stocks market and the better-than-expected U.S. economic data.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average skyrocketed 661.04 points, or 4.11 percent, from Tuesday to 16,746.55.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 48.78 points, or 3.69 percent, to 1,349.61.

Gainers were led by steel, insurance and transportation equipment issues.

The day's turnover was about 2,593.4 billion yen (around 22.78 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
