Tokyo shares open higher on upbeat U.S. market, yen's retreat

Tokyo shares opened the trading Wednesday sharply higher following rallies in the overnight U.S. market and a softer yen.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average jumped 402.18 points, or 2.50 percent, higher from Tuesday to 16,487.69.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 30.85 points, or 2.37 percent, to 1,331.68. Endit
