A 23-14 dominance in the fourth quarter earned Xinjiang a 70-61 away victory over Beijing for a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five finals of the Chinese Women's Basketball Association (WCBA) league here on Tuesday.

Sylvia Fowles, the MVP of WNBA finals in 2015, nailed only 14 points for Beijing due to her injury sustained at the end of the regular season. Zhang Fan had 16 and Shao Ting scored 13.

Peng Shiqing had a game-high 25 points and 7 assists for Xinjiang. Her teammates Qiu Siyue and Zhang Xiaoni added 14 and 12 respectively, and American Tina Charles grabbed 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Zhang Fan's two free throws gave Beijing a 26-17 lead as the first quarter ran out, before the visitors found their nets in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 36-37.

The game became more intensive as both sides exchanged leads time and again and eventually tied at 47-all at the end of the third quarter. Xinjiang further tightened their defense for a 9-2 run to surge ahead and kept Beijing away from the victory.

Game 2 will move to Xinjiang on Thursday. Endit
