Myanmar gov't condemns KIA new brigade establishment

Xinhua, March 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Myanmar government has condemned the establishment of the 6th Brigade by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), saying that the expanded establishment will bring negative effect on the government's peace process, official media reported Tuesday.

An announcement of the government's Union Peace Making Work Committee (UPWC) said that KIA's establishment does not serve the effort toward internal peace.

KIA formed its new 6th Brigade in Mongbaw, Mongkoe and Phaunghsai in northern Shan state on Feb. 26.

The formation came at a time when the government is implementing a nationwide peace process which is intended to ensure national reconciliation and national development and bring an end to armed conflicts, the announcement added.

The Myanmar government and eight ethnic armed groups out of 15 initiated a nationwide ceasefire accord on Oct. 15 last year excluding the KIA. Endit
