UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said here on Monday that the cessation of hostilities reached by the Syrian government and opposition forces was basically holding.

"As of now, I can tell you that, by and large, the cessation of hostilities is holding, even though we have experienced some incidents," Ban told reporters during a press conference. (UN-Syria-Cease-fire)

PARIS -- Under heavy presence of police, works started on Monday to dismantle the southern part of migrants camp in Calais, north France, local media reported.

According to the daily Le Figaro, about one hundred police officers have been deployed in the shanty town to allow workers clearing the site where about 3,000 migrants were staying. (France-Refugees)

ISLAMABAD -- At least 12 militants were killed and six others injured when Pakistani army launched an aerial and ground offensives in the country's northwest tribal region of NorthWaziristan on Monday, local media reported.

Local Urdu Channel Samaa News said that the forces, backed by jet fighters from Pakistan Air Force, pounded three militants' hideouts, killing seven militants in Shawal area of the North Waziristan, a semi-autonomous tribal area along Pakistan-Afghanistan border. (Pakistan-Operation)

ROME -- A wave of extreme weather with strong winds and torrential rain has claimed at least six lives and many injured people in Italy, local media said on Monday.

A 51-year-old farmer, Rocco Montorro, was killed when an eucalyptus crushed his car near Gioia Tauro, a city of southern Italy. Two other people were reported dead in similar ways also in southern Italy, while a citizen died when his car was swept into a river in central Italy. (Italy-Weather)

CHICAGO -- Gold futures on the COMEX division of the New York Mercantile Exchange rose on Monday as the G20 meeting ended with no tangible plan to boost growth, giving support to the precious metal.
