School in Fiji re-opens after cyclone

Xinhua, February 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Majority of schools will resume classes from Monday in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The Fijian government has been in a bid to bring all students back in classroom by March 7.

Education Minister Mahendra Reddy said all schools in the Southern Division and Vanua Levu would open from Monday.

However, some schools in Rakiraki, Tavua and Ba corridor will open from March 7.

Reddy said schools in the Eastern Division which included Koro Island and the Lomaiviti group which were the worst affected by the cyclone will take some time to resume classes.

Some schools have sustained severe damage making them unsafe for teachers and students.

Parents have been urged to make alternative arrangements for their children if their schools were not re-opening.

For safety reasons, it is important that your children remain under adult supervision during the day.

The Ministry of Education will offer regular updates on the progress of schools under repair and was exploring temporary solutions for affected areas. Enditem
