Hungarian PM criticizes EU, W. European leaders on migration

Xinhua, February 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Sunday sharply criticized Brussels and other unnamed western leaders for encouraging migration instead of helping prospective migrants at home.

Leaders in Brussels and other western countries were allowing their cosmopolitanism to encourage migration against the will of the majority of the people, he said in a State of the Nation Address delivered on Sunday.

Thus, the continent was under threat, not primarily from the migrants but from its own leaders who are acting to transform Europe against the will of the residents.

Orban said that leading politicians, human rights activists, and people smugglers had formed an "alliance," with Greece pushing migrants forward and Germany using the voice of a siren to encourage them to come.

Hungary is increasing its military, police and anti-terrorism units along its southern borders, including the Romanian border, and is ready to use force to make it clear that to enter Hungary one must respect Hungarian law and obey its uniformed forces, Orban said.

Hungary refuses to accept a mandatory quota of refugees; it will not import homophobia and anti-Semitism, will not see slums erected, will not see shelters burned, and will not allow women to be attacked and raped, Orban said.

And Hungary, which fully adhered to European Union law, refuses to swallow the bitter fruit of Brussels' actions, he added, likening the current crisis to a ship on a crash course.

"And instead of trying to avert the disaster, the captain is labeling the non-smoking lifeboats!" Orban said.

Hungary will hold a referendum on the quota issue, since the only way to halt Brussels is to let the people speak, Orban said. The European Union rests on the pillars of democracy which means that it cannot take decisions that fundamentally affect people's lives without listening to their opinions.

Europe is based on liberty, equality, and fraternity to many residents, and on faith, hope, and charity to many others, he said, but none of us want a flood of people trying to force their views upon us or to give up our thousand year old ideals. Endit
