Former Malaysian Deputy PM suspended as ruling party's duty president

Xinhua, February 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was suspended as the deputy president of the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO), effective immediately until the next party elections, said UMNO secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor on Friday.

Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO Vice-President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been tasked with carrying out duties as the party's deputy president.

The suspension comes at a time that Muhyiddin continuously criticizes Prime Minister Najib Razak's handling of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad and political donation issues.

Tengku Adnan said that there was a consensus among the supreme council members to move a motion to suspend Muhyiddin, after which Zahid and Najib left the meeting as they did not want to be involved in the decision making process.

Muhyiddin's divisional post will not be affected, he said.

Muhyiddin was not present when the decision was made during the party supreme council's meeting, as he was abroad. Also absent from the meeting was vice-president Shafie Apdal, who was seen as an ally of Muhyiddin.

Muhyiddin was removed from the post as deputy prime minister in a Cabinet reshuffle. Enditem
