Bolivia's ruling party admits "difficulties" in elections without Morales

Xinhua, February 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bolivia's ruling Movement for Socialism (MAS) will face "difficulties" in the 2019 elections without incumbent President Evo Morales on the ballot, a senior official acknowledged Thursday.

Minister of the Presidency Juan Ramon Quintana made the statement as the Bolivian cabinet met to discuss Morales' defeat in Sunday's referendum on whether allowing the president to stand for a fourth term.

It is time to reflect deeply within the the ruling party regarding leadership and management, Quintana was quoted by state media as saying, adding that MAS was not prepared for the ruthless campaign launched by the opposition.

He also accused the opposition of levelling "racist" comments against the president.

The repercussions of the referendum are yet to fully unfold. On Wednesday, Morales said, "I have lost the battle but not the war." Endi
