An influential former Afghan governor, Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi, who went missing in Islamabad two weeks ago, has been recovered, his family said Friday.
Wahidi, who had served as governor of the eastern Kunar and western Herat provinces, was "abducted" from an Islamabad's marketplace by unidentified people on February 12, according to the Afghan embassy.
"I can confirm that Fazlullah Wahidi was recovered early Friday as I have talked to him. He has been handed over to the Afghan diplomats in the Pakistani city of Peshawar," his son-in-law, Sayed Ikram, said in Pakistan. Syed Ikram is in Islamabad as part of an Afghan parliamentary delegation.
Ikram did not say how his father-in-law was recovered, but noted that he is in good health.
The recovered governor is scheduled to meet Afghan Ambassador in Islamabad Omar Zakhilwal later on Friday, he said.
No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
Wahidi's nephew had told the police that he had been taken by people in two vehicles from the Islamabad's F-7 sector. He was with his family members to get UK visas, he had said in a statement to the police.
Afghans travel to Pakistan for UK visas as they are not issued visas by the British embassy in Kabul. Enditem
