Latvian Railway gets new head

Xinhua, February 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Edvins Berzins has been appointed the new CEO of state-owned railway company Latvijas Dzelzcels (Latvian Railway), Latvian public television reported Thursday.

Until now, Berzins has been a member of the Latvijas Dzelzcels management board.

A tender to pick a new head for Latvijas Dzelzcels was organized after the company's long-standing CEO Ugis Magonis was fired on suspicions of graft last year. The Latvian Corruption Prevention Bureau suspects Magonis accepted a bribe worth nearly half a million euros.

Amrop executive search company, which helped select the new Latvijas Dzelzcels CEO, pointed to possible risks, saying that the position of Latvijas Dzelzcels CEO is "politicized" and that the salary is not competitive enough.

Latvian Railway is a state-owned company involved in freight transportation by rail and maintenance of railway infrastructure. Endit
