Xinhua, February 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

A car drove onto a sidewalk and hit pedestrians on Thursday in one of the busiest districts in Osaka, leaving a pedestrian and the driver dead.

One pedestrian was in critical condition and eight others were injured.

The car was seen hitting pedestrians crossing the street, and with no signs of deceleration, drove on to a sidewalk for about 40 meters before coming to a stop by colliding with a hotel's signboard and flower display.

The incident happened near Umeda station in the northern commercial center of Osaka, one of the busiest districts in the city.

The driver and a male pedestrian in his 50s died later after being sent to the hospital. A female pedestrian in her 20s is in critical condition while eight others sustained severe or slight injuries.

Police said the driver was a 51-year-old company owner from the city of Nara. Investigations were underway. Endit
