The Helsinki District Court has sentenced an Iraqi asylum seeker to four years imprisonment for raping a woman, Finnish media reported Wednesday.

The sexual assault took place in a park in downtown Helsinki last November when the woman was on her way home from a party.

The rapist was caught by police soon after the incident.

The information obtained by the Finnish daily Iltalehti showed that the Iraqi man arrived in Finland last September as an asylum seeker.

The judgment said that the offense was particularly brutal, as a number of traces of bruising and contusions were found around the woman's face and neck area. It also caused the woman to suffer from stress disorders.

The court sentenced the offender to four years in prison. Furthermore, the man was fined 18,000 euros (about 19,800 U.S. dollars) as compensation to the victim for the emotional distress, physical sufferings and other temporary disabilities she has suffered.

According to Finnish police, in 2015, there were about 10 suspected rape cases, in which alleged offenders are asylum seekers in Finland. Endit
