The first group of 15 migrants arrived in Malta on Tuesday as part of the European Union (EU)'s relocation program from Italy and Greece.

After completing the relevant procedures, the 15 Eritrean migrants from Italy were greeted by representatives from Maltese government and non-governmental organizations.

They are to be hosted at an initial reception center in Marsa for approximately seven days. During this period the asylum seekers will undergo medical screening, be registered and apply for international protection.

The migrants will subsequently be hosted in open center accommodation by the Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers (AWAS).

Malta is also expected to be welcoming another six migrants from Greece in the beginning of March. A total of 189 migrants will be relocated over two years in Malta as per the terms of the EU resettlement program. Endit
