Foreign military operation in Libya would set region on fire: Algerian analysts

Xinhua, February 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

As Foreign military operation in troubled Libya to chase out IS affiliated groups is imminent, the neighboring countries, including Algeria, are worried that the military intervention would spread chaos to the entire region, Algeria's security and political analysts said.

"We might witness a rush of refugees who would flee the war," said Algeria's former intelligence officer Mohamed Khelfaoui, adding that the IS affiliated terrorists might also take advantage of this refugees flux to sneak into Algeria.

Meanwhile, Algeria's former diplomat Halim Benatallah warned that a ground military operation in Libya would spread chaos to the entire North African region.

"Algeria is opposing a military intervention in Libya, but the Western forces will not take into consideration this opposition," Benatallah said.

Libya has been suffering a security vacuum with increased dominance of extremists since the fall and death of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The country has been plagued with escalating violence and political division.
