Ukraine declares end of deadly flu epidemic

Xinhua, February 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

The State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service (SSES) of Ukraine announced Tuesday that the deadly flu epidemic that started in the country last month is now over.

"The epidemic is officially over. The analysis of the situation showed that the influenza levels do not surpass the epidemic threshold in either of our regions," Svyatoslav Protas, acting head of the SSES, told a press briefing.

The flu epidemic that lasted four weeks has claimed the lives of 329 people in Ukraine, Protas said, adding that the SSES does not rule out the second wave of the epidemic in the near future.

The outbreak of flu in Ukraine in late September has snowballed into an epidemic during the cold winter season, affecting 9.6 percent of the country's population.

According to the latest data provided by the Health Ministry, the vast majority of the reported influenza-related deaths in the country were caused by the H1N1 strain, the so-called swine flu. Endit
