India extends 1 mln USD to cyclone-hit Fiji

India has given one million U.S. dollars as immediate assistance to the cyclone-affected Pacific island nation of Fiji.

"Reaching out to a friend in need. India extends USD 1 million in immediate assistance to Fiji after devastating Cyclone Winston hits," Indian External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted Monday.

At least 28 people have been killed in the cyclone that hit Fiji over the weekend, flattening many buildings in parts of Viti Levu island and Koro islands, but sparing capital Suva its full impact.

Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has described the storm as "an ordeal of the most grievous kind" and sought international assistance. Endit
