Malaysia reassures safety following foreign travel warning of terrorist threat

Malaysian government reassured the safety in the country on Sunday following a travel advice issued by Australia on terrorists treat.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade updated its travel advisory on Malaysia on Sunday, warning against "an ongoing threat of terrorism in Malaysia."

"Terrorists may be planning attacks in and around Kuala Lumpur. Attacks could be indiscriminate and may target Western interests or locations frequented by Westerners," it said.

Commenting on the travel advice, a Malaysian foreign ministry spokesperson said "it is nothing to be alarmed for".

"We also acknowledged the fact that foreign missions are at liberty to provide their own assessment of the security situation in their host countries albeit the fact that it may not be accurate or gives a true reflection of the situation," said the spokesperson.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Tajuddin Md Isa was quoted by local Star newspaper as saying that police had received no intelligence on terror treat, assuring safety in the Malaysian capital city.

Malaysian authorities have stepped up alert following the terrorist attack on Jakarta, Indonesia in January, arresting suspects with links to the Islamic State (IS). Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Saturday that the more than 100 Malaysian who fight for IS in Syria and Iraq would be barred from returning home. Enditem
