Two Haqqani local leaders detained in Afghanistan

Xinhua, February 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

About six Haqqani militants, including two local leaders of the militant group, have been captured in Afghanistan's eastern province of Khost, the National Directorate for Security (NDS) said on Sunday.

"Rahimullah and Satar had been detained along with four of their comrades following a recent special operation conducted by the NDS in close coordination with national army and police in Sabari and Bak districts of Khost," the country's intelligence service said in a statement.

As a Taliban-linked group of militants, the Haqqani network mostly operating in eastern provinces and capital Kabul, has been responsible for many high-profile attacks against security forces.

The captured men were involved in a series of terrorist attacks, including planting landmines, targeting civilian and military vehicles and conducting targeted killings in Khost, according to the statement.

Some five rounds of AK-47 automatic guns, one gun, two telecommunication radios and one binocular were found in their possession, the statement noted, adding that a huge Haqqani's weapon cache was also recovered by security forces after the raid.

The militant group has yet to make comments. Enditem
