Uganda's Museveni takes lead in over half of provisional results

Xinhua, February 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Uganda's incumbent President Yoweri Museveni is still taking lead in more than half of the votes so far tallied in the Feb. 18 general elections.

Provisional results released by the country's Electoral Commission on Saturday showed Museveni leading with 61 percent followed by Kizza Besigye, the Forum for Democratic Presidential candidate who has 34.9 percent. So far 51.2 percent of the total votes have been tallied.

Amama Mbabazi, former prime minister, has 1.5 percent and the rest of the percentage is shared by Abed Bwanika, Benon Biraro, Maureen Kyalya, Joseph Mabirizi and Venansius Baryamureeba.

The final results are expected later on Saturday.

If Museveni wins the election, his 30-year ruling will be extended for another five years, making him one of the longest serving presidents in Africa. Enditem
