Museveni takes lead in provisional results of Uganda elections

Xinhua, February 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Provisional results released by Uganda's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Friday showed incumbent President Yoweri Museveni is taking lead in Thursday's presidential polls.

Badru Kiggundu, chairperson of the IEC, said out of 36.58 percent of the total votes so far tallied, Museveni has 62.3 percent lead followed by his closest rival Kizza Besigye, who has 33.46 percent.

Amama Mbabazi, former prime minister has just 1.72 percent of votes, and the rest of the percentage is shared by Abed Bwanika, Benon Biraro, Maureen Kyalya, Joseph Mabirizi and Venansius Baryamureeba.

Maureen Kyalya was the only female candidate in the presidential race.

The final results are expected to be announced on Saturday.

The country's Constitution requires that the results are declared within 48 hours after the close of the polls.

If Museveni wins the election, his 30-year ruling will be extended for another five years, making him one of the longest serving presidents in Africa. Enditem
