Myanmar fish farmers on alert against El Nino

Xinhua, February 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Myanmar Fisheries Federation has put fish farmers on alert amid El Nino impact, calling for necessary measures to be undertaken to avoid possible loss due to high temperature, local media reported Friday.

The federation predicts that the country's fisheries sector may get worse this year than in previous year due to the natural disaster.

Last year's flooding destroyed more than 30,000 fish farms in several parts of the country, the federation said.

According to statistics, fish stock caught in Myanmar waters was 1.1 million tons in the 1980s but there has been a gradual decrease since 2013, declining to 103,000 tons.

Myanmar earned 86 million U.S. dollars from the export of 7.9 million tons of fish stock in 2015, reaching the 120-million-USD export target.

However, the federation predicts that the target for 2016 will not to be realized.

Myanmar Meteorology and Hydrology Department has warned of a powerful El Nino in the coming summer season, saying it will be a record strong ever to be registered. Enditem
