Xinhua, February 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

The city of Barquisimeto, in Venezuela's western state of Lara, will host the upcoming South American Under-17 Women's Championship which will take place between March 1 and 20, confirmed the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) on Thursday.

Group A will be made up of Venezuela, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru while Group B will include Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Bolivia and Ecuador, according to Conmebol's official website.

The tournament will be played in two stages - the first phase and the final phase. The two teams that finish at the top of each group will go through to the final stage.

The tournament's champion, runner up and third place will automatically qualify for the International Federation of Association Football's (FIFA) U-17 Women's World Cup 2016 in Jordan later in the year.

Paraguay vs Chile and Venezuela vs Argentina will kick off the tournament in Lara's Metropolitan Stadium on March 1.

Venezuela's team, coached by Panamanian Keneth Zseremeta, are looking to repeat the victory they achieved in the previous edition which took place in Paraguay in 2013. In this edition, the Venezuelans defeated the hosts and obtained a ticket to the 2014 World Cup in Costa Rica.

In the U-17 Women's World Cup, Venezuela lost against Japan in the semi-finals and then against Italy on penalties in the fight for third place.

The tournament will be played between all countries that have a women's U-17 national team whose federations are members of Conmebol.

The South American Under-17 Women's Championship 2016 will be the first big soccer tournament to take place in Venezuela since the Men's U-20 South American Championship in 2009. Endit
