UN Security Council urged to protect Guinean peacekeepers

Xinhua, February 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Guinean President Alpha Conde on Thursday urged members of the UN Security Council to protect his country's peacekeepers who are fighting terrorists in northern Mali.

Speaking during a meeting with diplomats and representatives of international institutions in Conakry, Conde appealed for security measures to be taken to avert barbaric attacks against Guinean soldiers based in Kidal, northern Mali.

Conde said it was important to secure camps of peacekeepers operating under the UN Mission in Mali, by properly equipping them.

Positions of Guinean peacekeepers in Kidal were targets of terrorist attacks on Feb. 12, which left seven Guinean soldiers dead and 20 others injured.

Conde said "Guinea will not cow to acts of intimidation," and will continue operating under the United Nations banner to restore peace in Mali.

The remains of Guinean soldiers who died in Mali arrived in Conakry on Wednesday.

A UN delegation led by Mohamed Sale Amadif, representing the UN secretary general, is currently in Guinea to deliver UN's condolences to the Guinean nation. Endit
