More than 600 migrants who arrived in Latvia last year were placed in the Mucenieki asylum center outside Riga, the head of the Latvian state police, Ints Kuzis, said on public radio Tuesday.
Their arrival did not affect public security in the Baltic country, he said.
The police official indicated that the asylum center provided accommodation for over 600 migrants who applied for asylum in Latvia in 2015.
The head of the state police noted, however, that the law enforcement authorities had recorded an increase in various criminal and administrative offenses committed by people seeking asylum in Latvia or other EU member states.
Over the next two years, Latvia is expected to admit 531 migrants who have to be relocated from Greece and Italy under the EU's plan. The first two families of asylum seekers arrived in Latvia earlier this month. Endit
