Spain confirms 23 Zika virus cases

Xinhua, February 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Spanish Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality on Tuesday confirmed 23 cases of the Zika virus have so far been detected in the country.

The ministry also confirmed all cases have been imported by people who had previously visited countries where the virus is prevalent.

The ministry has published a protocol agreed with the Spanish Society for Genecology and Obstetrics to ensure a standardized procedure for following the cases of pregnant women who have been diagnosed with the virus, which is thought in some cases to cause birth defects.

Meanwhile, health services in Spain highlighted it was virtually impossible to catch the disease in Spain. This is because the tiger mosquito, or aedes albopictus which can carry the disease, is currently dormant in Spain, it added. Endit
