Djibouti opposition endorses candidate for presidential poll

Xinhua, February 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Djibouti's opposition coalition, National Salvation Union (USN) which brings together eight parties, on Monday endorsed Omar Elmi Khaireh as its candidate in the April 8, 2016 presidential elections.

Khaireh is the chairman of Center for United Democrats and the vice-chairman of USN.

Born in Djibouti in 1947, Khaireh is a renown Djibouti independence hero who was detained for long by the French colonial authorities.

Even though he has never held any public office, he is respected by many Djiboutians who view him as "a freedom fighter."

After Khaireh's endorsement, USN president Ahmed Youssouf Houmed urged opposition supporters to give full backing to their candidate.

He further urged the international community to "play its role by ensuring the country holds free and fair elections." Endit
