Flu rates in Europe on the rise: ECDC

Twenty-five of the 50 reporting member states had indicated a rise in cases of influenza and acute respiratory infection, according to a report issued by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

"Influenza transmission in Europe shows a clear seasonal pattern, with peak activity during winter months," the agency said in its report.

It also observed an increase in cases of severe disease over the course of the week, mainly due to influenza in people aged between 15 and 64.

In all, 38 countries had detected flu viruses, suggesting heightened activity in Europe as a whole, according to the ECDC. High-intensity flu activity was reported by authorities in Belarus, Greece and Ireland.

No additional countries had reported indigenous cases of the Zika virus as of Feb. 12, the agency said, with the total number of countries remaining at 36.

The ECDC, headquartered in the Swedish capital since 2005, works with health authorities across Europe in fighting infectious diseases. Endit
