Czechs begin negotiations on resettlement of refugees from Italy, Greece

Xinhua, February 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Czech Republic has started negotiating the resettlement of the first 30 refugees who entered Europe via Greece and Italy, said the Czech interior ministry on Monday.

According to the redistribution quotas approved by the European Union in 2015, the Czech Republic should resettle 2,691 people from countries most affected by the migratory crisis by the end of 2017.

The Czech Republic voluntarily joined the EU relocation program and committed to accepting 1,100 refugees from Italy and Greece in July 2015, and the number was raised by a further 1,591 refugees two months later.

The resettlement of the first 30 refugees was mentioned in a report on the migration situation to be debated by the government on Wednesday.

Twenty people are to come from Greece and 10 from Italy. Preparatory discussions should start in the first half of February. Endit
