Bangladeshi cabinet endorses draft law allowing EPZ welfare unions

Bangladeshi cabinet Monday gave its final endorsement to a draft law that allows workers to form welfare unions to bargain for their rights in Export Processing Zones (EPZs).

The approval for "The Bangladesh EPZ Labour Law, 2016" came Monday at a regular cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told reporters after the meeting.

He said the draft law is going to be framed in light of the existing Labor Law 2006.

It has got final approval after consultation with all stakeholders in EPZs which accommodate 431 industrial units under operation while 134 are under implementation, he added.

Bangladeshi and foreign investors such as those from Britain, Canada, China, Germany and India, have invested in eight EPZs, enjoying a large number of fiscal and non- fiscal privileges. Endit
