Bahrain says arrests 4 foreign journalists for partaking in "illegal protest"

Xinhua, February 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bahraini has arrested four foreign reporters after they took part in an "illegal gathering," a senior police official said on Monday, as the country marks the fifth anniversary of the 2011 unrest.

The arrests took place in Sitra on Sunday, the Manama police chief said in a statement.

"One of them was masked and arrested with others who attacked policemen and involved in arson and sabotage acts," said the official.

"They have been afforded full legal rights in line with the Kingdom's procedures and constitution while investigations continue," he added.

Online reports said that the U.S. Embassy in Manama said in a statement Monday it was "aware of the arrest of four U.S. citizens in Bahrain."

The 2011 protests in Bahrain were driven by the country's Shiite majority, who demanded greater political rights from the Sunni-led monarchy.

On Sunday, protests erupted in some parts of the country and police arrested some children who were involved in vandalism acts, officials have announced. Endit
