3 school children killed, 2 injured as lorry runs over them in eastern India

Xinhua, February 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

In a tragic incident, three children were killed and two others were injured in a road mishap on their way to school near the eastern Indian city of Kolkata Monday.

"The mishap happened when the five were run over by a speeding lorry on the Belghoria Expressway in Rabindra Nagar on Kolkata's outskirts while they were crossing the road," a police official said.

While the three school children died on the spot, the two injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of one is said to be serious, he said, on condition of anonymity.

Local TV channels reported that the incident triggered massive violence in the morning and showed footage of angry locals torching two passing vehicles in protest and blocking the highway.

The situation was brought under control after cops charged batons to disperse the crowd, the police official said, adding a manhunt has been launched to nab the lorry's driver who fled soon after.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he added. Endit
