Thiem causes major upset by defeating Nadal in Buenos Aires

Xinhua, February 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem, ranked 19th in the world, surprised the crowd Saturday by defeating superstar Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires.

Thiem, 22, is seen as one of the great prospects for global tennis. He lived up to that reputation in Argentina by defeating the former world No. 1 and title defender 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4).

Showing serious holes from his game and proving he is still far from the level that made him one of the best players in history, Nadal still had a match point in the final tiebreak. However, Thiem hung on to come back and win.

This means Thiem will play on Sunday to win the fourth title of his young career against the winner of the all-Spanish semifinal between David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro.

The winner will go away with prize money worth 523,470 U.S. dollars. Endi
