Canada orders Nissan to recall all problematic vehicles

Xinhua, February 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Canadian Transport Minister Marc Garneau on Friday ordered Nissan Canada to step up efforts and recall all problematic vehicles.

The order was issued Friday when Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida arrived in Ottawa, capital of Canada, for an official visit, the first visit by Japan's top diplomat since 1996.

The vehicles of safety concern were 2005 and 2006 Nissan X-Trail models. A defect in the fuel reservoir filler pipe coating with those vehicle models could result in dangerous fuel leaks if unrepaired, according to the order.

The Canadian transport ministry remains very concerned that the defect hasn't been corrected in enough of the affected vehicles, though the campaign by Nissan to recall the problematic vehicles began in 2014. It is not immediately known how many problematic vehicles of the mentioned models had been sold in Canada.

In accordance with the Subsequent Notice Order, the Japanese automaker Nissan is required to identify and contact the current owners of 2005 and 2006 X-Trail models by using vehicle registration information. Costs associated with this process will be paid by Nissan.

Nissan is now also required to send the Canadian Transport Ministry quarterly reports on the progress of this recall. Endit
