Gunfight between militants, troops rages in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, February 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

A gunfight between militants and Indian troops Friday broke out in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at Chowkibal in frontier district of Kupwara, close to Line of Control (LoC), about 125 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A gunfight has started at Marsarri area of Chowkibal today," said a senior police official posted in the area. "Troops of Indian army and police are jointly trying to take on militants present there."

The officer said three militants are believed to be in the area.

Officials said troops cordoned off the area following intelligence inputs about presence of militants.

The exchange of gunfire between militants and troops was going on until last reports came in.

"An exchange is going on between the two sides," the officer said.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.

Last week three militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit were killed in the region. Endit
