Tokyo stocks plunged Friday morning with the benchmark Nikkei average temporarily dropping below 15,000 for the first time in about 16 months, as the yen spiked against the U.S. dollar on a grim outlook for world financial markets.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average tumbled 838.74 points, or 5.34 percent, from Wednesday to 14,874.65.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, plunged 70.25 points, or 5.55 percent, to 1,194.71.

Markets were closed on Thursday for a national holiday. Endit
