No systemic barriers to using euro in int'l transactions: EU study

Xinhua, February 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

A European Commission study on the international role of the euro has shown that there are no systemic barriers to using the euro in international transactions, the Eurogroup said Thursday.

The finance ministers of the euro area countries during their meeting Thursday here exchanged views on the study, which was carried out at the Eurogroup's request.

Citing the study results, the Eurogroup in a statement noted that for historic reasons, some sectors, such as oil or aviation, traditionally use invoices in U.S. dollars.

The eurozone finance ministers agreed with the European Commission's opinion that sound macroeconomic policies and further strengthening of the Economic and Monetary Union are among the key factors that could encourage the use of the euro in international transactions, according to the statement.
