Lack of diversity in diet leads to varying levels of stunting in North Korean children

A new assessment by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) have found moderate to high levels of stunting among children under the age of five in nurseries assisted by WFP, a UN spokesman said here Thursday.
"This assessment confirms that many households in areas where WFP operates do not have enough diversity in their diet," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here. "These findings also come against a backdrop of deteriorating overall food security in the DPRK, where there has been decreased rainfall and lower crop yields in the past two years."
WFP's operation is currently only 48 percent funded, and the shortfall has forced it to reduce the geographic scope of its operation, according to the spokesman. Endit
