Ukrainian president calls for urgent actions to secure IMF support

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called on the government and the parliament Thursday to take urgent actions in pursuing reforms to secure the support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"The cabinet and the parliament should focus on accelerating the introduction of an effective corporate administration into the largest enterprises, particularly into the state-run Naftogaz firm. Besides, we should adopt the privatization law and the visa-free legislation during the next plenary week in the parliament," Poroshenko was quoted as saying by his press service after phone talks with IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde.

Another urgent step that is needed to be taken for continuing cooperation with the IMF is the alignment of Ukraine's anti-corruption legislation with the fund's requirements, Poroshenko said.

In particular, he stressed the need to amend the law on the appointment of the anti-corruption prosecutor and to settle the issue of recovering assets confiscated from corrupt officials.

On Wednesday, Lagarde has warned that Ukraine risks losing the IMF's 17.5-billion-U.S.dollar bailout program over slow progress in carrying out reforms and combating corruption. Endit
