Prosecutor wants ex-Chadian president jailed for life

Xinhua, February 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

The prosecutor at the African Special Court in Dakar on Wednesday asked for "life sentence" against former Chadian president Hissene Habre.

The prosecutor, a Senegalese national Mbacke Fall, equally called for confiscation of goods of the former Chadian president who is facing charges of crimes against humanity, war crimes and acts of torture.

According to the prosecutor, sufficient evidence has been given to prove his culpability.

"Regardless of the sentence, his victims will have to benefit," Fall said.

Defense lawyers are expected to give their closing submissions on Thursday and Friday. The ruling is expected at the end of May 2016.

The case which began on July 20, 2015 at the African Special Court within the Senegalese judiciary, faced some difficulties when the former Chadian president termed the proceedings as "a travesty of justice" and refused to present himself before the court.

Even though he was later forced to appear in court, Habre refused to participate in the proceedings or respond to questions posed by the judges.

On Thursday last week, Habre's lawyers accused the African Special Court of showing partiality since the start of the case. Enditem
