1st LD Writethru: Indian avalanche survivor dies at hospital

An Indian Army soldier, dubbed the miracle for surviving an avalanche at Siachen glacier last week, died at a hospital in Delhi Thursday, defense sources said.

Lance Naik Hanamanthappa, who was in a coma and on life support, passed away around 11.45 p.m. local time, the sources said.

Doctors treating him said this morning that the 33-year-old's pneumonia had worsened and he had slipped into a deeper coma.

The Indian Army solider who was pulled out alive this week after being trapped under 25 feet of snow for nearly a week, following the avalanche at Siachen glacier, the world's highest battlefield.

While he had survived the avalanche, nine other soldiers who were part of his regiment were found dead lying beside him.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier this week visited him at the premier Army Research and Referral Hospital, saying he brought "prayers from the entire nation". Endit
