UN Security Council extends mandate for experts' panel in Sudan

Xinhua, February 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

The UN Security Council on Wednesday extended the mandate of the panel of experts monitoring the implementation of sanctions in Darfur, Sudan, until March 12, 2017.

In a unanimously adopted resolution here, the council expresses its intent to review the mandate and take appropriate action regarding further extension no later than Feb. 13, 2017.

The council also requests the Panel of Experts to provide a midterm update on its work to the Sanctions Committee no later than Aug. 12 2016 and to submit a final report to the Council by Jan. 13, 2017, said the resolution.

Otherwise, the resolution is identical to last year's resolution on the Sudan Panel of Experts.

Darfur has been crippled by fighting between rebel groups and government forces and allied militia since 2003, which has led to the deaths of about 300,000 people and displacement of more than 2.5 million people. Endit
