Iran's president urges mass turn out in revolution anniversary ceremonies

Xinhua, February 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday called for mass turn out in the ceremonies to mark the anniversary of Islamic revolution on Feb. 11.

As with the previous years, it is expected that people would partake "gloriously and massively" in the 37th anniversary of the Islamic revolution this year to show solidarity and unity of the nation in the face of perils.

"We must participate in the ceremonies with higher spirit," since "the unanimous participation of people means national unity and would solidify our security," Rouhani was quoted as saying by state IRIB TV.

The 1979 revolution toppled the U.S.-backed regime of Shah and brought the country under the leadership of Ayatollah Seyyed Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini, an event seen as a turning point in Iran's history.

The high turn out of the nation also means to honor the recent diplomatic "victory" for Iran which resulted in the recognition of the Iranians' nuclear rights by the world powers.

The deal, reached on July 14 last year between Iran and five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany, or P5+1, ended a decade-long dispute over Tehran's controversial nuclear program.

The agreement resulted in the lifting of international and Western nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions on Iran in exchange for wide-scale limitation on the country's nuclear activities for specific period of time. Endit
