Hamas militant killed in Gaza tunnel collapse

Xinhua, February 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Islamic Hamas movement announced Tuesday that a member of its military wing Al-Qassam Brigades died in a tunnel that collapsed in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Qassam brigades said in a press statement that Marwan Barham Ma'rouf, 27 years old, from the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis, died in the tunnel collapse without disclosing information about the incident or the tunnel location.

Observers have cited an increase in number of victims in tunnel collapses.

Israel said Hamas used those tunnels to carry out operations against Israeli targets.

Al-Qassam brigades said last Wednesday that two of its militants died in a tunnel that collapsed in Gaza city, while seven others were announced to have been killed in another tunnel collapse due to bad weather conditions in Gaza on Jan. 28.

Hamas movement said a total of nine militants died in "resistance operations" in 2015, including incidents of tunnels collapsing.

Hamas often refers to incidents involving deaths of its militants as "resistance operations" without clarifying the circumstances of their deaths. Endit
