35th Cobra Gold military exercise kicks off in eastern Thailand

The 35th Cobra Gold multi-national military exercise, the largest of its kind in the Southeast Asian region, started in eastern Thailand on Tuesday.

The Cobra Gold exercise, scheduled to last until Feb.19, was ceremonially opened at Thailand's Marine Corps headquarters, adjacent to a Thai naval base, in the coastal Sattaheep area of Chonburi province.

The annual military exercise is seeing more than 8,700 troops from several countries in the Asia and Pacific region taking part in Thailand's eastern and central parts, including those from the Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, the United States and Thailand.

Chinese and Indian military officers are also taking part in a humanitarian aid exercise.

Staff officers from several other countries are joining in a mixed staff operations exercise including those from Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, France, Italy, Mongolia, Nepal, the Philippines and the United Kingdom.

Several other countries have also sent officers as observers to the Thailand-based exercise including those from Brunei, Chile, Laos, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. Endit
